Chrysalis

Chrysalis explores the theme of protection through two bodies of work, highlighting the contrast between nurturing environments and the cold realities outside of the cocoon. Mixed-media and sculptural paintings visualize protection in nature, such as a cocoon and bird nest, and a relationship between mother and baby animals to depict maternal instincts and love. In contrast, I also portray myself in the real-life environment of the restaurant I used to work in, encircled by impersonal, cold objects.

During my time in high school, when my father was severely ill, I was apart from my family for nearly 3 years. Their absence, and the missing love and protection, led me to anxiety and depression. The word chrysalis defines a stage of growth – a hard case that protects a moth or butterfly as it turns into an adult. Chrysalis reflects the lack of family protection I experienced and how it continues to affect my adulthood.
